Iao Valley and Needle
This short drive, up one of the deep wet gorges that dissect the West Maui mountains, is as much for scenic enjoyment as for botanlcal interest. In the canyon below the needle, patches of guava forest can be found.

Up the canyon to the right is one of the spectacular erosion remnants, the Iao Needle, a volcanic spine of imposing form and size. (Above: David and Kathleen pose at the Needle).

Japanese Gardens of Iao Valley
Driving up the road towards the Iao Needle is the Kepaniwai Heritage Park. Built along side the Iao Stream
are formal gardens and various structures representing the peoples of Hawaii, such as the Japanese Tea House, A Chinese Moon Gate and Hawaiian Grass houses. (Above: Dave and Mary in the Japanese Gardens).
